Daily 5- Chapter 5

1. How will you
instill the importance (or urgency) of 'listening to reading' in your
students and especially those students who have had little 'lap time' or
reading done for them in their own homes?
I really did not push listening to reading last year like I should have, but I am a beginning teaching, so I learn from my mistakes:) I am going to use the daily 5 in my classroom this year, so I am going to incorporate the listen to read section and hope it works out. I know as I have been reading that modeling is so important and I have learned from that too...I want listen to read to be just as important as everything else...
If there is any suggestions from the readers...please let me know...I can always take advice:) I love the knowledge that you fellow colleagues have:)
2.
What devices or strategies are you going to use to conduct listen to
reading? Will you use a community recording device with one cd and
several earphones, individual cd players, tape recorders, ipod-type
devices or computers?
I am going to refer to the daily 5 book on how to talk about the listen to read station and model...model...model...I know that is so important:) I did not do so well at modeling last year, so that will of course be my focus this year around...I know the little ones need that guidance in the beginning:)
I saw in some blogs that using separate cd players worked really well in there classroom, so I am going to try that out this year. I just recently bought cd players on Amazon for only 6 bucks so I super excited to use them:) I want my kiddos to have the freedom to move around the class and go where they want during that time...so I will try that:) I hope this works and will have to have faith:)
3.
What expectations will you have for your students during 'listen to
reading' and how will you keep them on task and independent instead of
needing your assistance when they can't manage devices?
Of course there will be modeling before using any devices in my classroom. Like Kindergarten Smiles said model and anchor charts..so the students can be responsible in what they use and how they use it...I might even have a tech kiddo this year, just so if they need assistance they can go to that person and not disrupt what I am doing at that time...I think that might help that problem before it happens...Please I am open for suggestions too:)
4.
Do you have enough 'listening to reading' type materials? If not, what
ideas do you have for securing these materials? Where will you store
them? How will your students retrieve these items? Where will they be
used (will there be a designated spot in your class for listening to
reading or will it be their choice?
I am not sure if I have enough listening books...I might have to see how much I have and then maybe find a way (cheap) to acquire some more...I'll have to look around:) Any suggestions please:)
I will have a separate area for my listen to read, so the kiddos know where to go to get the materials they need for that section...I have bags for the book and cds and I will have a bin where the cd players will be stored for the kiddos to use...I will of course model all of these procedures, so they know where to put things back:)
5. How do you feel about listening response sheets? What will they look like?
I love response sheets..it shows me that they were doing what they were supposed to and it shows me that they really tried to understand what they were listening to:) I also love the response sheet I just discovered from one of the post...it is simple and easy for the Kinders to use in the beginning...Thanks to Maria Manore:)
I have more saved on my stick...if anyone would like to see...I just don't know how to download them to share:)
Read to Someone
1. Why should students be reading to someone?
It will give the kiddos an opportunity to ask for help and to also share opinions when needed...also it can be a great way to break the ice with other students who are shy or don't really talk to anyone...It also helps other kiddos to hear others read the same book they are reading in case they did not understand that part of the story:) It also helps with the kiddos getting along too... I've never tried it, so we will see what happens...:)
2. How can your students EEKK?
I have never done the daily 5, so this is my first time hearing about EEKK and I love it and I love all the great posters that were given from other bloggers:) Thank u so much for that...:) I am diffidently going to incorporate this into the reading part, especially with the different positions students can be on the carpet:) I love the things that some of the bloggers mentioned to about using while reading too...especially the animal pillows:)
3. How can your students read to someone and how will you need to model these ways with your students?
Of course from reading the other blogs I saw the different ways that the kiddos can read to each other and I love it, especially the different pillows:) I will model..model..everything so the kiddos can see the right and wrong way on how to do the read to someone. It is so important for the Kinders to see this, so they don't do it wrong the first time around:) If anyone has suggestion on how to model this please feel free...I will take any advice:)
4. What is one thing you have done with partner reading that ensures the success of your students?
I have not done partner reading yet, but some of the kiddos last year just read together anyways..it seemed to go ok, but I'm sure there could have been a better way of doing this:) Any suggestions..since I'm a new teacher and new to the daily 5:)
Hey Marla! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I think the seperate CD players for each kid would be ideal. Maybe some day I can have that ;) PS I'm your newest member
