Daily 5- Chapter 3

1. Establish a gathering place for brain and body breaks.
I never thought of calling it other than "come to the carpet" That is actually a great idea...I am going to have to think about that one during the summer...maybe even for my small group table as well...:) Having something labeled and known to the students all year will help the kiddos..at least I think so:) I have a jungle theme for my classroom..maybe something all with that theme...any thoughts from fellow bloggers would be awesome:)
2. Developing the concept of "good fit" books
I am definitely using that lesson for picking the books with the kiddos, especially since I am teaching K again..:) I know they will get a kick out of that lesson, especially with the different shoe sizes that are funny...:) Should I have books in their box's already??
3. Create anchor charts with students...
I love..love them and try to use them for everything:) This year I will take pictures and put in a binder, so I know which ones to use from year to year...got the idea from Pinterest:) Love that idea too:) I will try to put them all around my room, so the kiddos can see them every where through out the school year...a reference:) Hopefully the fire code won't take that away...lol:)
4. Short, repeated intervals of independent practice and setting up book boxes
This is my question, how do we keep track of their stamina, since being a new teacher I need advice on that one:)...
One of the K teachers on our team found mag. holders at IKEA 5 for 1.99, totally using those and then going to put their picture on it, so they know it is theirs:)
Another question, since doing this for the first time what should I put in their book box's on the first day??
5. Calm Signals and check in procedures
I have a timer/ or no yell bell, haven't decided on which one I want to use yet...I went back and forth last year and thinking I should keep with one thing going and not switch it up...any thoughts:)
I would probably use stop, look, and listen or give me 5 which we will talk about a head of time of course...We will rehearse over and over till its right:) Model...Model...I was told:)
6. Using the correct model/incorrect model approach for demonstrating appropriate behaviors.
I will definitely use that model for my kinders this year...:) I think it will work well for them, especially the ones that might get out of hand...:)
I could give the attention seekers different tasks with me..maybe having different goals to work for than others, but still have them participate with others, if that doesn't work, then they can work beside me or be my helper for awhile till they calm down...I will try anything and everything...:) Any suggestions...:)

  1. Make sure you read The Kindergarten Teacher--blog. After reading her blog post and looking a her 1st 6 weeks of lessons I have a better grip on things..

I think I'm going to really focus on How to read books at first and then later progress to the Good Fit Books. I am going to have 3-4 books in their boxes at first. Then divide kids in groups and each group has a particular day & time to switch out books. I think it will be easier to practice w/ a sm group rather than whole class.

A question I have is when do you teach the alphabet?? Will it be in small group?

Also I'll do Heidi Songs to bring them back to the carpet. She is awesome!

I taught the alphabet through out the beginning of the year...I did the alpha friends with them...they really enjoyed it...Am I focusing on it too long?? I did it in whole group..a lot of my teaching was in whole group...
